Out of sheer boredom, I watched the Jenny Jones Show this morning. Wow. Really, I think it's possible to spot all of the flaws of a society by watching one of it's talk shows. At one point, just after a commercial break, a phone number flashed across the screen, accompanied by a wholly disturbing voice-over. "...Do you know an over-weight teen who claims to be a player? Does she talk about all of the gifts she gets in exchange for dates with men? If you want to tell her that she's too fat to be all that, call blahblahblahblahblah..." First, why, whywhywhy, would anybody want to comment on an over-weight teen girl's size, anyway? And on public tv, no less? Is it really necessary to REMIND them of their alienation? Why is the issue weight, anyway? I'd be more concerned with the hint of prostitution that is obviously implied. Promiscuity and sexual confidence are two entirely different matters completely, but again, that is not the issue. The problem at hand, clearly, is that these girls are lying about their exploits, because fat girls do not get laid, nosir. Yeah, talk shows are my weakness. I admit it. I HATE the "You're Too Fat To Be All That" shows (they always have the same title, by the way, no matter which show you're watching) with a bloody burning passion. Sure, I may not exactly want to see a four hundred pound woman wearing a skin-tight tank top and daisy dukes, but then again, I don't get any kicks out of seeing skinny women in them, either. OH! And the women are always booed when they walk on stage. As if they should be hanging their heads in shame over their weight.
