mainsqueeze's Diaryland Diary

biology

Day one of my "vacation"-- one week of paid time off to search for a new job, pay bills, sort myself out, relax with the boyfriend, friends, and family: Woke up late, 430pm late, to a phone call from Jeromy. So my day started all right. Unfortunately, another call came in within an hour of that one. My sister's puppy, Laverne's baby, died at the vet this afternoon. The one houseplant we own, turns out, is extremely toxic to animals. Eight week old Honey, curious puppy, chewed up the leaves and absorbed enough poison to make her too sick to survive. Mom and Lise are downstairs clinging to each other and crying, Mom blaming herself and occasionally shouting curses, Lise red-faced, ten-years old, not knowing how this stuff works and why it happens. It's scary that we have always had dogs and cats in our lives and homes and we never knew that one nibble of a certain plant could kill them. I urge any of you that have pets to look up plants, vegetables, and fruits that could harm them. There are many seemingly innocent things that can seriously hurt an animal.
